Importing routes or waypoints to Garmin Mobile XT without USB connection E-mail
Normally you will install routes to Garmin Mobile XT using Mapsource's "transfer..." and your Pocket PC/Smart phone connected to your PC's USB. If you have an old device you might not be able to connect it to PC due to missing USB drivers. In my case I have a Mio P350 Pocket PC, there are no USB drivers for Microsoft Windows 7. So I use the following method to transfer routes to Garmin Mobile XT 5 installed on my Mio

  • Before you start make sure you have installed Mobile XT and a decent routable map on your device of the area of the route (preferrable City Navigator). Make sure Mobile XT is not running on your device.
  • Make sure you have the route and/or waypoints in a .GPX file. If it's another format, use Mapsource or another tool (for example Tyre) to convert it to .GPX format.
  • Insert SD Card in cardreader and connect to PC
  • Copy .GPX file to SD card in any location and call the file CURRENT.GPX
  • Insert SD card in your device and on your device use "File Explorer" to copy CURRENT.GPX to the folder /Garmin/gpx on the device(not on the SD card!). If there is no /Garmin/gpx folder on the device, then make it (there should at least be a /Garmin folder with a couple of .NVM files in it).
  • On your device start Mobile XT. After clicking "I agree", it should note it's importing the routes/waypoints. (After succesful import, Mobile XT will remove the /Garmin/gpx/current.gpx file)
  • In Mobile XT go to "Manage my data" / "Routes" / "View Routes", the new route should be there. If the .GPX file contained any waypoints, you can find them under "Manage my data" / "My Locations".

More Info
The fact that the import file should be called "CURRENT.GPX" and should be located in /Garmin/gpx is defined in file /Garmin/GarminDevice.xml. View this file if your interested (copy to SD card and open it on your PC).

In this file you can also see that you can import Custom POI through a .GPI file which you have to locate in /Garmin/poi (did not test this yet myself).

Please leave a comment below if this method did or did not work for you. Good luck!

Question: When I start Mapsource, I get an error message saying there's a registry problem with Mapsource. How to solve this?

The problem is there is probably a registry key left behind pointing to a map(family) on your harddrive that is no longer available. You can solve it as follows.

"I just got my Nuvi a couple of days ago, used Metrowizz and made up 476 megs of Europe maps. Thats way more than I will need for my vacation. I copied the file as suggested into the Garmin directory on the Nuvi...works great. Thanks for Metrowizz and your help in getting it up and running. I changed my location to places I will be staying in Europe and it routes to my destination with street names and turns called out. Garmin makes great products, you make them work better. Thank you!"

"Outstanding Product - worth its weight in Gold! This is just a terrific addition that makes the Garmin Etrex a great little GPS instead of just an ok device. For $6 (US) it cannot be beat. I certainly hope they continue to create products that support the Garmin GPS portfolio. Well done guys!"
